FarmLink Business Skills Academy
March 6, 13, 20, and 27

Location (in the Petaluma area)
$80 for four sessions, including dinners.

The Academy will be conducted through four in-person sessions each Wednesday afternoon during March, from 3-7 p.m. Participants that have confirmed their participation will receive a “Farm Business Health Assessment.” This tool helps identify your business skills and needs, and assists in identifying goals to grow and sustain your farm or ranch operation.

Each participant will complete their own “Farm Business Health Assessment” to assist instructors in working with you throughout the Academy.

This series will provide you with the tools you need to evaluate the overall business health of your farm or ranch. It will help you to set goals for how to improve your business management practices for near-term sustainability and long-term wealth creation. Those who complete all sessions will receive a zip drive with all materials, a certificate of completion, a one-on one-session with a farm credit specialist, and an hour of one-on-one technical assistance.

Topics include: How to structure your farm or ranch business, Labor, Accounting systems and other farm or ranch records, Income Taxes, Understanding cash flow and credit, Insurance, and Environmental and other regulations

This course is open to people who meet the following criteria:
1) Own or lease land where they operate a farm or ranch business
2) Have owned or operated their own farm or ranch business for at least three years
3) Farmers of field crops, row crops, nursery products, and poultry or livestock (the course is not applicable to vineyards or orchards)

Deadline to apply: Thursday, February 14.

In order to apply, send an email to Gary Peterson gary@cafarmlink.org with a short statement indicating: 1) if your operation is on leased land or land you own, 2) how long you have operated your farm or ranch business, and 3) the products that you sell.

The course instructors are Poppy Davis and Lennie Larkin. Poppy is a former CPA with a law degree who specializes in business training for small farms and ranches. Lennie owns and operates B-Side Farm & Floral Design, growing on one acre in Sonoma County, CA. She teaches in the Horticulture department of Santa Rosa Junior College, and mentors new farmers through her role as West Coast Director of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, as well as through private workshops at her farm.
