Farm Succession Planning
Many families face the challenge of addressing the goals of parents, on-farm children or heirs, and children or heirs who are not interested in living or working on the farm in the future. Resolving these issues can be difficult. California FarmLink can provide tools to help clarify goals and facilitate family discussions about the future of the farm business. FarmLink can help facilitate intergenerational and intrafamily farm transitions and refer you to additional professional assistance.
California FarmLink also advocates for farmland conservation and smart growth. We encourage the effective use of estate planning, conservation easements and other tools to help structure sustainable farm transitions. Preserving farm businesses is also important, and FarmLink has launched the Agrarian Elders and the Next Generation project to create business succession strategies for farmers including founders of California’s organic agriculture movement. The project focuses on linking and mentoring that help the next generation to learn, grow and invest in proven farm operations.
California FarmLink recognizes that farmers are committed to stewardship of their land and must plan for their long-term financial needs. For this reason, we help identify strategies that blend farm transfers and conservation in ways that make financial sense for farm families.
