Vazquez Brothers Berry Farms, a Salinas-based strawberry operation founded by Antonio Vazquez, demonstrates the impact of accessible agricultural financing in supporting business growth, job creation, and long-term operational stability.
Antonio brings more than 30 years of experience in California’s strawberry industry to his business, having begun working in the fields at age 15 and advancing through roles as a laborer, foreman, and supervisor. Drawing on his deep expertise in cultivation, labor management, and harvest operations, he launched his farm with 10 acres of production.
Since its founding, the operation has maintained a consistent marketing partnership with Naturipe Berry Growers, providing stable market access and supporting reliable revenue streams. This foundation has enabled the business to focus on scaling production and improving operational efficiency.
In 2024, Antonio was referred to California FarmLink by another farmer and accessed financing to support expansion. The loan enabled the farm to grow from 10 to 17 acres for the 2025 season and supported the addition of approximately 10 employees, bringing peak employment to around 30 workers. The financing also allowed for investment in equipment to improve productivity and farm efficiency. Antonio successfully repaid the initial loan and secured a second operating loan to support continued expansion to 20 acres in 2026.
“With the loan, there’s less pressure. You can work better knowing you have the funds. Without that support, it wouldn’t have been easy. I might still be at 10 acres instead of growing to 20.”
Beyond expansion, Antonio has demonstrated consistent financial discipline and reinvestment into his operation, aligning loan repayment with seasonal production cycles. His long-term vision includes continued growth of the farm and the potential involvement of the next generation as his children pursue higher education and professional careers.
Vazquez Brothers Berry Farms reflects the impact of agricultural lending programs that are responsive to the realities of farming operations, enabling experienced growers to expand production, invest in productivity, create and sustain rural jobs, and build long-term economic resilience in California’s agricultural communities.
